چکیده

In the past the major concerns of the VLSI designer were area speed and cost power consideration was typically of secondary importance In recent years how ever this has begun to change and increasingly power is being given comparable weight to other design considerations Several factors have contributed to this trend including the remarkable success and growth of the class of battery powered per sonal computing devices and wireless communications systems that demand high speed computation and complex functionality with low power consumption In these applications extending the battery service life is a critical design concern There also exists a signi cant pressure for producers of high end products to reduce their power consumption The main driving factors for lower power dissipation in these products are the cost associated with packaging and cooling as well as the circuit reliability System designers have started to respond to the requirement of power constrained system designs by a combination of architectural improvements and advanced design automation methodologies and technqiues for low power In parallel researchers and CAD tool developers have introduced a variety of models algorithms and techniques for estimating the power dissipation in VLSI circuits and systems in support of the low power optimization and synthesis techniques This article describes representative contributions to the power modeling and esti mation of VLSI circuits at various levels of design abstraction

A Minimal-Cost Inherent-Feedback Approach for Low-Power MRF-Based Logic Gates

The Markov random field (MRF) theory has been accepted as a highly effective framework for designing noise-tolerant nanometer digital VLSI circuits. In MRF-based design, proper feedback lines are used to control noise and keep the circuits in their valid states. However, this methodology has encountered two major problems that have limited the application of highly noise immune MRF-based circui...

A low-power VLSI architecture for full-search block-matching motion estimation

This paper presents an architectural enhancement to reduce the power consumption of the full-search block-matching (FSBM) motion estimation. Our approach is based on eliminating unnecessary computation using conservative approximation. Augmenting the estimation technique to a conventional systolicarchitecture-based VLSI motion estimation reduces the power consumption by a factor of 2, while sti...

Maximum power estimation for CMOS circuits using deterministic and statistic approaches

| Excessive instantaneous power consumption may reduce the reliability and performance of VLSI chips. Hence, to synthesize circuits with high reliability, it is imperative to eeciently obtain a precise estimation of the maximum power dissipation. However, due to the inherent input-pattern dependence of the problem, it is impractical to conduct an exhaustive search for circuits with a large numb...

A Design Methodology for Reliable MRF-Based Logic Gates

Probabilistic-based methods have been used for designing noise tolerant circuits recently. In these methods, however, there is not any reliability mechanism that is essential for nanometer digital VLSI circuits. In this paper, we propose a novel method for designing reliable probabilistic-based logic gates. The advantage of the proposed method in comparison with previous probabilistic-based met...
